'Grove of Trials', 2025. Water-soluble graphite on Bristol. 7 x 10".
'Grove of Trials' was completed for the 4th Year Illustration Anthology at Emily Carr University. For this piece I wanted to try and blend mythological-type creatures with Canadian pioneering. The result was a narrative scene where a pioneering family run into a mysterious roadblock. Friend or Foe? Let's hope 'Friend' for their sakes! In any case, I added a mongoose-drawn cart to ward off any scaly threats. Incorporating snakes into trees was an idea that stemmed from a sketchbook design. It's always been interesting to see some random side drawing of mine become a fully fledged illustration.
"Grove of Trials" was featured in the '4th Year Illustration Anthology Exhibition' from Feb. 3 - 10, 2025.
